The Columbia bubble is an intense, stress-inducing world of its own. It is consistently ranked among the most stressful schools in the nation, and we can always do more to address our mental health. Another major concern is physical well-being. In the mere first week of school, a handful of Columbia students were hospitalized due to heat exhaustion. The absence of air conditioning in all of the residence halls during summer is unacceptable and must be attended to promptly. In addition to our ourselves, we should also keep our earth in mind, as our accumulative actions may have negative effects on our environment.

  1. Update the current system of mental health appointments, which often must be booked weeks in advance, to be easily accessible;

  2. Install air conditioning or at least provide more fans in all lower campus residence halls (John Jay, Wallach, Hartley) during hotter days;

  3. Collaborate closely with EcoReps to promote sustainability on campus, starting with all the wasted food in our dining halls.

The Kung Fu Foundation is working to make your Columbia experience as awesome as possible by improving the overall classroom and extracurricular experience along with increasing school spirit as a university and as the engineering school. (See our Commitment to Elevation below.) Currently, we have the reputation of having the weakest school spirit among the Ivy League and other top schools. It is up to us to change that— after all, campus life at Columbia is your life for the next four years.

  1. Increase school spirit, promoting a sense of belonging and creating hype around what it means to be a Columbia student;

  2. Improve class registration times; make all waitlists instructor managed to provide students who demonstrate interest a better chance to take the classes they want rather than leaving it to unfair randomly assigned registration times;

  3. Replace illegible chalkboards in classrooms with modern, dry-erase white boards;

  4. Create an application that streamlines campus event and student organization information to easily see deadlines and subscribe to listservs.

As student leaders, it will be our responsibility to serve you: the student body. We are, by no means, running for popularity or for something to add on to our resumes. Our mission is to represent your concerns, your ideas, and your voice. Thus, we will constantly strive to be as open as possible with each and every one of the 338 SEAS freshmen and will always welcome new ideas, recommendations, and suggestions. Without a doubt, the Kung Fu Foundation will be accessible, reliable, and available to talk with all members of the SEAS class of 2022.

  1. We will punctually update our website with the results of every meeting and any changes or additions to policies to keep the class aware and informed;

  2. We are open to meeting with anyone to discuss ideas or policies and will hold regular hangouts where you can just drop by and chat;

  3. We will create a public blog for students in our class to voice their viewpoints.

COMMITMENT TO ELEVATION

CC or SEAS? It’s the question that separates us all. You’ve probably answered it a few hundred times over the course of NSOP. But what benefits does introducing yourself by school bear? Perhaps your college friends know you as “that SEAS kid” or think of you differently because you’re in Columbia Engineering and not Columbia College. Maybe you’ve felt like you don’t belong when walking by the CC flags outside the freshman dorms, or climbing down Low Steps on the way home only to read the words “COLUMBIA COLLEGE CAMPUS.” It’s time to elevate the status of SEAS. Join the Kung Fu Foundation, and together we will rise.

  1. Columbia Engineering exclusive merchandise in the CU Bookstore

  2. A design contest for the new merchandise as a fundraising initiative, open to all members of the SEAS Class of 2022

  3. SEAS-only Class of 2022 events, aimed to bring together and unify our class of engineers

  4. SEAS merch giveaways to encourage attendance at class events

ANTHONY ADESSA - president
aja2197@columbia.edu

What’s up class of 2022? My name is Anthony and I’m campaigning to be your Engineering Student Council Class President! I’m from San Diego, California, and still not quite adjusted to the New York City weather. Back at home, I served as my high school class president, Model United Nations president, and FRC robotics co-captain. I’m also an Eagle Scout and former little league baseball umpire. My plan is to study either computer science or financial engineering, both of which I love and currently can’t decide between. I am so excited to have the opportunity to impact a community as great as Columbia’s for the better, but this impact depends upon all of you. Our community is far from perfect— I wouldn’t be here running if it were— but today we have the opportunity to make a giant leap toward that goal. Who do you want to be the voice of our student body? Should you decide me to be that voice, rest assured— I am always fighting for you.

I’m Joanne, but you can call me tonight (jk, please don’t). Everyone calls me Jo, and I’d love to be your ESC Vice President. I like telling people I’m from NY because I was born there and went to school there, but I was raised in NJ (stop your boo-ing please). I held multiple leadership roles in high school, such as being the co-founder and co-President of Girls in STEM, a club that advocates for gender equality in STEM-related activities inside and outside of school. I was also Editor-in-Chief for my school’s science magazine and a forward for the Girls Varsity Field Hockey team. I have been an active member of Girl Scouts since the age of six, and now I have a lifetime membership. I have big dreams to realize at Columbia— I’m hoping to study Biomedical Engineering alongside Entrepreneurship & Innovation (premed maybe?)— and those dreams include yours too. Confide in the Kung Fu Foundation, and you can be assured that we will always fight for you.

Hey lions :D! My name is Naomi (you can call me Nay), and I’m running to be your Engineering Student Council Class Representative. Like Anthony, I’m also from San Diego, California. Our high schools were high key rivals, but mine is objectively better— ask Anthony, he’ll agree. I was born in Canada, but I’ve lived in Korea, France, and the US! Some of my main commitments throughout high school included serving as Class Secretary for three years, spearheading Math Field Day as Chief Organizer, and competing on a Team USA synchronized figure skating team (yes, I can do those spins in the air). I plan on studying Financial Engineering at Columbia, and though I have absolutely no idea where college will lead me, I’m currently considering a career in financial management and consulting. Confide in the Kung Fu Foundation, and you can be assured that we will always fight for you.

What’s poppin’ homies? You probably already figured out that I’m running for ESC Class Representative. I am a certified desert boy from Phoenix, Arizona. I am the son of a Peruvian immigrant, and beyond being a first generation American, I am also a first generation college student. Back home I was an Award-Winning Mineral collector and successfully aided in passing a campaign to make the mineral Wulfenite the official state mineral of Arizona. Here at Columbia, I will be studying Earth and Environmental Engineering and hope to one day be a Mining Engineer. Confide in the Kung Fu Foundation, and you can be assured that we will always fight for you.
